Rust / Rot stop help needed Disco 1

Postby DSDL 200tdi » Mon 11 Jan 2016 1:54 pm

Hi all , i doubt you'll be surprised but my 23yr old truck is rusting/rotting in places and i need to get on top of it before it gets any worse. Its relatively good but inner arches and inner outer sills are on there way out and most places have surface rust like the boot and floors. I was wondering if i could get a wire brush on it and then paint it with something to prevent it getting any worse ?

Also i have no idea about this but is it possible to cut out the inner & outer sills and just weld in a big piece of box section ?

Thanks all , i did'nt think i'd like my Landy as much as i do and have big plans for her so need to get the basics done first.

thanks for reading all, D.

Yes, box section is a common way of doing it.
Couple of links to other sites from the Tech Archive, unfortunately a lot of the relevant pics from 'Write up 1' seem to have disappeared and 'Write-up 3' has gone altogether. Signing in to the site makes no difference. Little difference doing the job on a Disco 1 or RRC.

'Write up 1' showed the bad areas of the old sill being trimmed back to sound metal, the box section is then pushed up into the good that's left & seam welded along where the two met. Pity the photos have vanished as it was a very good 'How to' - if anyone knows where they can found please let me know!

Cheers for that bud thats good to know that would cross off the rock sliders part and id be able to weld tree sliders off of them, going to remove all carpet and have a good look so how big this iceberg is.
