how to tell a 5 bearing engine? help needed

Postby dustyhorse » Wed 26 Jan 2011 8:33 am

I need to source a 5 bearing diesel series III engine

I always thought it was just a matter of finding one with a red block , but what happens when it has been painted,

are there other tell tale signs, might you be able to tell by the engine number

cheers
Currently own series 1 80inch, range rover 300 tdi manual needs work,300tdi rangerover auto and a 300 tdi defender 110 r reg dropside tipper, what a super bit of kit why didn't Landrover make one?

There will be ribs in the side of the block on a 5-main bearing block for strength.

Also, use the first 3 numbers of the engine number - see http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/engno.htm

For example, mine starts 366 (from that site)

366xxxxxx Series III diesel 2286cc 5-bearing

Hope that helps :)

One other point, the 5 bearing engine has a crankshaft pulley damper where the 2.25 diesel doesn't
