If all levels are fine & the light goes off & stays off with a slight increase in revs first suspect is the pressure sender switch itself.

Oil light flicker

Postby Aeromole » Sun 23 May 2010 11:35 pm

Definitely change the oil pressure switch. I've had this happen twice.
The switch cured one, but the other time the camshaft pulley came loose, allowing the camshaft to float. Needed a new camshaft, couple of followers, couple of valve rods, but the old girl still topped 200K miles.
Hope it is your switch.....

I was going down a long hill and decided ( at the time ) to put it into neutral to save a bit of fuel and my oil light flickered on.

Its only done 212 thou miles on an H reg.

So what can I do to check it apart from keeping it in gear !!

replace the switch, they're only a few quid they tend to get crud in and become weak hence the flickering, the recession must be biting hard trying to save fuel doing that unless the hill was about 40 miles long you wouldn't save anything really, also if you're in neutral then you are relying on the brakes stopping you in an emergency as there's no engine braking and less control over the vehicle, personally i wouldn't do it on safety grounds, but back to topic try another switch and it wouldn't hurt to change the oil and filter too if it's been a while.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll see about getting a switch and fitting it.
