Bonnet Stay: Spare On Bonnet!

Postby JulianBrown » Thu 12 May 2011 3:12 pm

I have my spare wheel mounted on the bonnet of my 1984 LR 90 Truck Cab because (a) the fittings were there when I bought the vehicle and (b) I need the space inside the back of the vehicle. (I have an Ifor Williams rear cover fitted).

My vehicle has no bonnet prop so you can imagine how difficult it makes things just to do a routine oil & water check. In fact I think all of the fittings for a prop have been removed.

Any ideas for a solution? One helpful soul suggested I run a rope from the bonnet catch and tie it on the back bumper!

Tried that. Found it a tad dangerous especially when the bonnet fell and missed my head by inches!

two types were used on 90/110's the folding type - similar to the series type and the one piece pro - that's recomended for bonnets with wheels on.

or the latest variant http://www.numcat.ru/landrover/p/31/52646/ BUT TdCI Defenders cannot have the bonnet spare carrier fitted.

My immediate thought is just to fit the correct stay for the job, I can't believe that the lug is missing on the bonnet framework?
The solid prop is the correct one to use with a bonnet mounted spare and only costs around £10 brand-new as a pattern part, there are the other fixings required (stowage clip, washer, split-pin etc) but these are only going to add another couple of £ to the total.
